This is a thoughtful, heartfelt debut CD from Eugene songwriter and performer, William “Chico” Schwall, who has long been a mainstay on the Oregon folk scene. His music is simple without being simplistic, an endearingly honest and listenable blend of traditional folk, old-time, country, and a more contemporary singer/songwriter sound. Schwall's lyrics explore themes of love, moral courage and outrage, ambivalence, disillusionment, perseverance, and hope. The songs work best when they are more personal than pointedly political, when he digs deeper into familiar questions and quandaries and finds his own answers. A good example is “Sadness is Better,” in which he approaches the central theme (allowing oneself to feel sad and grieve) from several directions at once, creating an inspiring and thought-provoking song that skillfully combines many layers of meaning into a cohesive whole. Other highlights are “What Will It Be?”, “Hungry Ghosts,” and “What Goes On?” There are also a couple of nice instrumentals, an old-time-style banjo duet “Chapin Creek,” and a (in his words) ‘PaleoCeltic Beatgrass” tune, “Job”s Tears.” His solid playing on guitar, banjo and other stringed instruments gives the music backbone, and he gets tasteful support from his backing musicians.
