Welcome to America's Health care System

2006-04-16

Last night i went to a fundraiser for Dick Gunn, who is battling cancer, and next month I'll be playing a similar event for Stacie Sisk. It was great last night to be with so many friends and the good feelings were warming. But is this how health care works? Really expensive treatments are not covered, more of us are uninsured. In a few years will everyone be having a house party to raise funds to get their children's teeth filled?

Our health care system is badly broke and the whole thing is falling apart fast. Americans pay more for our health care than anyone else on earth. What do we get for it? Millions of Americans have no health care at all and the number, especially of children, is growing. We are not 'healthier' than other countries in life expectancy, infant mortality or other measures (27th worldwide). Doesn't bother our leaders in D.C. because they all have a single payer health plan that doesn't cost them a dime. How about us? It would be good for us too.

And good for everyone. General Motors could probably make money if we had National health. Universal health care would be cheaper than the system we have now. The only obstacle seems to be that rich folks are dead set against paying for anything that doesn't belong solely to them and which might possibly benefit someone else. It's a hard attitude to understand, seeing as most of us don't mind sharing, and have some sense of responsibility to the greater good.
